On chartering from Washington
Washington is the American capital, and the private-aviation footprint reflects that. Dulles is the workhorse: two 3,505 m runways, continuous customs, four FBOs and easy transatlantic departure performance. Reagan National sits three miles from downtown but is not routinely available for charter, only for DASSP-approved operators. Manassas and Leesburg round the market out with more relaxed ramp availability and shorter customs windows. The right airport therefore depends on the aircraft, the operator's DASSP status, and the passenger's tolerance for a 15 minute versus a 45 to 60 minute ground transfer. JetAlto quotes each option explicitly so you can trade time on the ground against choice of airport.
The New York to Washington corridor is the most active single business-aviation pairing on the US East Coast. Teterboro to Dulles alone represents 7.79% of all Teterboro traffic. Light-jet legs quote at roughly USD 9,000 to 16,000 and midsize at USD 12,000 to 20,000. Empty-leg supply is dense midweek and thins on Friday evenings when Wall Street traffic converges toward the Hamptons and Palm Beach. The Chicago, Boston and Miami corridors follow the same pattern. If you can flex a day either way, empty legs usually pay for a category upgrade.
Washington's peaks are institutional. Presidential inaugurations, State of the Union week, party conventions and international summits routinely quadruple weekend traffic. The Friday to Sunday before the January 2025 inauguration produced over 700 business-jet arrivals across the DC region, a 300% jump over the previous weekend. When those weeks come, primary FBOs at Dulles and Reagan fill early, and overflow shifts to Manassas and Leesburg. Booking those weeks four to eight weeks ahead is not optional if you want an on-time slot at your preferred field. JetAlto flags each institutional peak on the quote page so you can time the trip around ramp availability rather than the political calendar.
The transatlantic play is straightforward from Dulles. A fully loaded Global 7500 or G650 departs the 3,505 m runway to London, Paris or Frankfurt with no takeoff penalty and no fuel stop. Return sectors from Europe route back to Dulles or divert to Baltimore Washington International when Dulles ramps are full. For a five-day business trip, JetAlto typically quotes a round-trip fixed price with 24 hour flexibility on the return, plus a stated ground overnight fee if the aircraft holds at Dulles rather than repositions. The result is a delivered door-to-door cost that reflects the full mission rather than an optimistic direct-airport assumption.
