What to know before you book

Empty legs

Repositioning flights from Malé

The Maldives is a pure destination market: aircraft drop passengers, cannot park economically for a two-week stay, and leave empty for Dubai, Singapore, Colombo, Mumbai or Delhi before returning empty to collect. Those five corridors are where flexible dates pay off, typically cutting 35-60% off an on-demand quote. Peak windows (Christmas, New Year, Chinese New Year, Easter) have the deepest inventory but the tightest timing windows.

FAQ

Charter from Malé, questions we get

Is there a private jet terminal in the Maldives?
Yes. Velana International (MLE) has a purpose-built VIP terminal on the north side of Hulhulé island, with private customs and immigration desks. It handles all business-aviation arrivals separately from the main commercial terminal, and connects directly to the seaplane terminal and speedboat jetties for resort transfers.
How long is the runway at MLE?
Velana International has two 3,400 m runways at sea level. That supports every business jet class including ultra-long-range types (Global 7500, G650ER, Falcon 8X) at maximum takeoff weight, so westbound departures for London or Zurich are routine even in tropical heat.
Which cities are nonstop by private jet to the Maldives?
Ultra-long-range aircraft fly nonstop from London (9h 10m), Zurich, New York (14h), San Francisco and Singapore. Heavy jets do Dubai, Mumbai, Delhi, Bangkok, Hong Kong and Singapore nonstop. Super-mid handles Dubai and Doha nonstop. From further afield, one tech stop is planned in Dubai or Colombo.
How do we get from MLE to our resort?
Three options. Seaplane (Trans Maldivian Airways or Manta Air) is the fastest for atolls within 200 km of Malé but stops at sunset, so late arrivals need to overnight or use a speedboat. Speedboats run 24/7 and cover the North and South Malé atolls in 20-60 minutes. Domestic flights on Maldivian or Manta Air handle the farthest atolls (Gan, Kooddoo, Kaadedhdhoo) with a short jet or turboprop leg.
Do we need a visa for the Maldives?
No. The Maldives issues a free 30-day visa on arrival to every nationality with a valid passport and confirmed accommodation. The VIP terminal processes it in a private room, typically in under 10 minutes.
Can we bring alcohol on the private jet?
Alcohol is legal on private aircraft in Maldives airspace but not on the ground outside resort islands. It is confiscated by customs at arrival and returned on departure. Resort islands are licensed and stock every major label. JetAlto briefs passengers on this before departure.
When are empty legs available?
Steady inventory Dubai-Male, Singapore-Male, Mumbai-Male, Colombo-Male year-round. Christmas, New Year, Chinese New Year and Easter produce the deepest empty-leg windows because operators reposition heavily. Ask JetAlto for live inventory once your dates are firm.
How much does a Dubai to Maldives charter cost?
Super-mid (Challenger 350, Citation Longitude) runs $42,000 to $58,000 one-way for 3h 40m block time. Heavy jets $58,000 to $80,000. Ultra-long-range for larger groups or continuation itineraries $85,000 upward.
Market notes

On chartering from Malé

The Maldives is a pure destination market and every practical detail follows from that. Velana International sits on its own island, Hulhulé, connected to Malé by bridge and to every resort by seaplane, speedboat or domestic charter. The airport handled 6.4 million passengers in 2024 across two 3,400 m runways at sea level, and the VIP terminal on the north side of the island processes private arrivals separately from the main passenger building.

What the Maldives does not have is a stand-alone FBO campus of the kind found at Al Maktoum, Seletar or Chek Lap Kok. Movements run through the airport's business-aviation arrangements and appointed handlers. That is why route planning matters more than it does at a hub airport: parking is limited in peak, permits need 48-72 hours in the peak season, and the seaplane terminal closes at sunset. Get any of those wrong and a passenger arrives at midnight with no way to reach their resort until dawn.

The Maldives is nonstop territory for ultra-long-range aircraft from London (about 9h westbound), New York and San Francisco with the right tailwinds, and Zurich or Geneva year-round. Heavy jets handle Dubai, Mumbai, Delhi, Bangkok, Hong Kong and Singapore nonstop. Super-midsize covers the Gulf and India in comfort. From Europe outside London, one planned tech stop in Dubai or Doha gives you an ultra-long-range experience on a heavy jet at heavy-jet cost.

The single biggest planning item is the transfer. Late-afternoon arrivals give you the widest onward-transfer window; early evenings mean the seaplane operators are shutting down and a resort in the outer atolls becomes a next-morning problem. JetAlto works the itinerary backwards from the final resort transfer slot and quotes the Malé end accordingly.
