Empty legs

Repositioning flights from Koh Samui

Koh Samui traffic peaks between December and March in the dry season and drops in the September-November monsoon. The corridors that generate the most empty legs are Bangkok to Samui year round, Phuket to Samui in the high season, and Hong Kong to Samui around Chinese New Year. Flexible dates on those routes save 40-70% against on-demand.

FAQ

Charter from Koh Samui, questions we get

Who owns Koh Samui airport?
Bangkok Airways owns and operates Koh Samui airport (USM). It is the only privately-owned commercial airport in Thailand. Landing fees, slots and ramp allocation are managed by the airline rather than the state.
What is the largest private jet that can land at Koh Samui?
The published landing distance available is 1,660 to 1,825 m depending on direction. Light jets like the Citation CJ3+ and Phenom 300 are comfortable, midsize aircraft like the Citation XLS+ and Praetor 500 need weight planning, and heavy jets do not operate here.
Is Koh Samui airport open 24 hours?
No. Operating hours are 06:00 to 22:00 local with no night operation. Long-haul inbounds need to be scheduled to land inside that window, and late Hong Kong or Chinese departure points are the most affected.
How long is Bangkok to Koh Samui by private jet?
About 1 hour 5 minutes block time on a light jet. It is one of the busier domestic private corridors in Thailand alongside Bangkok to Phuket, and empty-leg availability on it is reasonable through the high season.
What happens if my jet is too big for Samui?
The alternate is Surat Thani (URT), 60 km west on the mainland. Ferry or helicopter connects to the island in an hour or less. Heavy jets and most super-midsize itineraries use this pattern.
Is there a hangar at Koh Samui airport?
No. There is no hangar or maintenance facility on the field. Overnight aircraft park on the ramp exposed to weather, which is a planning factor for longer stays.
When is the best time to fly to Koh Samui?
December to March is the dry season and takes most of the traffic. April to August is warmer but has better empty-leg availability. September to November is the monsoon and the quietest window with the most weather-related schedule risk.
Do foreign-registered aircraft need permits at Samui?
Yes, Thai landing and overflight permits are required for foreign-registered aircraft. Handlers arrange them as routine with typical lead time. Samui slots are also allocated by Bangkok Airways and need coordination alongside the permit.
Market notes

On chartering from Koh Samui

Koh Samui airport is the only privately-owned commercial airport in Thailand. Bangkok Airways built it in 1989 and has operated it ever since, and it is one of the most photogenic small airports in Asia, with open-air pavilions in place of a conventional terminal building. The fact that it is a private airport rather than a state-run one is not just an ownership footnote: it changes landing fees, slot allocation and how commercial and private aviation share the ramp.

The runway is 2,100 m of physical surface but the published landing distance available is 1,660 to 1,825 m depending on direction, which is a materially shorter operating envelope. Cessna Citation CJ3+ and Embraer Phenom 300 handle it comfortably, Citation XLS+ and Praetor 500 need weight planning, and heavy jets do not operate here. Instead, the pattern is to land a heavy at Surat Thani 60 km west and take the last leg by helicopter or ferry.

Operating hours are 06:00 to 22:00 local with no night operation. That is one of the tighter windows for a major Southeast Asian resort airport, and it does affect long-haul inbound scheduling. A Hong Kong to Samui trip that leaves in the early evening has a hard planning constraint at the arrival end. A Bangkok to Samui turnaround inside a day is entirely comfortable within the window.

There is no hangar or maintenance facility on the field, which is the other planning constraint. Aircraft that stay overnight park on the ramp exposed to weather. Any technical issue means an aircraft or parts have to come from Bangkok or Phuket, which turns a small problem into a schedule slip. For a normal turnaround itinerary this is not a factor, but crews and operators are aware of it when planning longer stays.
